Chatting with people while you appear offline

I was thinking that it would be really cool if you could chat with people while u appear offline. Would that be possible. I know that on yahoo you can do that. Like an invisible mode or something.

You can do this with msn for mirc. Just block the user. simple as that

sometimes there is only one person I want to chat with. People like my girlfriend get offended when I am not chatting with them. Sometimes I only want certain people to know I am online. I know yahoo has an option like that.
